Olde Stonewall is a semi-private 18-hole golf course located in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.
The course, designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry opened for play in 1999.
The course was built on 269 acres of farmland and wooded hills along the banks of Connoquenessing Creek. 750,000 tons of huge stone cubes are used throughout the course, lining tee boxes, cart paths, and water hazards. Olde Stonewall is true to its name.
The course has two distinct nines, it starts with a typical low country front nine followed by a more undulating back nine with several dramatic elevation changes.
Level lies are hard to come by on a course that’s laid out on such rugged terrain, where enormous limestone blocks are found all over the place; lining cart paths, supporting elevated tee boxes and underpinning hillside green sites.
The architects let the land dictate the back nine. There are no par 5’s and the two par 3’s are back to back. That’s what the site dictates.
#16, a 474-yard par-4 is considered by many to be the signature hole. It plays to a fairway that lies 80 feet below an elevated tee position, which allows the average golfer to enjoy a bit longer than normal hang time and distance on their drive.
